Black History Month
Each February, Black History Month commemorates the contributions, achievements, and lasting impact of Black communities in the United States. The observance began in February 1926 when Dr. Carter G. Woodson established “Negro History Week.” Over the decades, it grew alongside the Black liberation movements of the 1960s and 1970s and was officially recognized as Black History Month by the U.S. government in 1976. In 2026, we celebrate 100 years of national Black history commemorations. The theme, “A Century of Black History Commemorations,” invites reflection on the past while continuing the work of honoring Black excellence today. Learn more here.
