UC Merced's inaugural Free Speech Week took place on Feb. 22-26, 2021. The series of events organized around the theme "Can Speech Truly Be Free?" was possible due to funding provided by the UC National Center for Free Speech and Civic Engagement and consisted of various virtual sessions that covered multiple topics associated with free speech and hate speech.
