EJIE sponsors an annual 5K run in recognition of the tradition among indigenous tribe of California to engage in distance running for the purpose of communication and competition. Members of local tribes and residents of the greater Merced community are invited to participate and run through a campus course that includes passing beneath the "Beginnings" sculpture, crossing over the Scholars Bridge, and passing by the Toloma Grove Native acknowledgement and reflection area. Monies raised are directed to the support of Native American student scholarships and programming
